Undressed and Impressed

On September 20, 2009 hundreds of cosmetologists gathered in Bellevue, Washington at the Meydenbauer Convention Center for an educational hair show called Undressed. The entire Elle Marie team was on hand to soak in all of the education being offered. Redken and Pureology, along with a few other companies, had their top educators and artistic directors on hand demonstrating the latest styles and colors sweeping the industry. Undressed Hair Class

A number of classes offered our stylists new and innovative ways to assist our guests in achieving their desired look. One strategy that helps achieve a particular look is to prepare the hair by applying a product before drying, such as a “leave in” conditioner or styling cream. Shannon King of Redken impressed as she applied basic techniques with new textured looks. The inverted bob is out! If you want short, go shorter! Also this coming season will see a lot of texturing and layering in front around the face rather than in the back as has been done in the past.

Redken’s color specialist, Leah, showed different color placements that can change a person’s look from DRAB to FAB-U-LOUS! One technique that really stood out to Ally was the “hot roots” affect. Ally has been coloring her hair dark for years; wanting something new and fashionable without damaging her long locks. Leah showed us how to take our Redken fashion color line and make a subtle change into something dramatic and fresh. Ally applied this technique to herself and loves her new look! Add a comment

Using a Color Gloss to Maintain your Gorgeous Summer Hair

With summer upon us, we need to take extra precautions with our hair. Every couple months we get our hair cut and colored and sometimes it seems as though the result leaves us with ends that are even worse than before we entered the salon! You may also find that your color tends to fade between color services. This year it has been happening more than ever due to the beautiful weather we’ve been so fortunate to enjoy. Finally we’ve had a chance to step outside and enjoy this rare season of sunshine! We are also spending a lot of time in the pool and, as you all know, the sun and chlorine can wreak havoc on your hair.

The key is to be proactive! To combat these issues I would suggest using a color gloss after each service. Here at Elle Marie Hair Studio we utilize Redken's Clear Shades EQ for just that purpose. The color gloss fills up your hair shaft and allows the hair to lie nicely without the typical frizz. The nice thing about a color gloss is that is doesn’t weigh down the hair and will leave your hair shiny all day long. The application process takes only a few extra minutes and will make such an impact on your hair. As an artificial redhead, I am regularly faced with this very challenge - especially in the summertime. I recently began having one of our Elle Marie stylists apply a color gloss every month and the results have been amazing! I have shiny hair everyday and my red hair isn’t fading nearly as fast. You don't have to apply the gloss every month either, but it wouldn’t harm your hair or your pocket at only $20 per application. Considering that I don’t have to color my hair so often due to its darker, muted red tones, $20 is more than reasonable to maintain the long-lasting look I strive to achieve.

Curls, Curls, Curls

Girl with Brown Curly HairDon't be afraid of what you have ladies. 90 Percent of women with straight hair have been jealous of your hair at some point of their life. And I know it can be annoying at times, especially the rainy days that we're all so used to here in the northwest. The pros to having curly hair are that whether you wear your hair straight or curly, you will always have body. Also, you'll never have that oily hair syndrome and therefore won't have to wash your hair everyday. The cons, of course, are that you have frizz and the "puffy" look almost indefinitely. So I want to give you a few helpful tips on how to avoid stressing about your lovely mane!

If you find yourself in a humid climate, PUT AWAY THE FLAT IRON! Embrace those luscious curls. Put in some serum and curl gels to help tame the 'fro. We have a product line by Redken specifically for curly hair that is affordable and really works! The best strategy is to use a serum that has silicone directly in the product. After putting the product in your hair, take a curling iron and just curl sporatic pieces which make it look like you curled everything. Add a comment
